Q&A

Common malfunction troubleshooting
1.PV module illuminated face discoloration

Analysis: this phenomenon occurred several years after PV station has been put into use, the color usually changed in crystalline silicon components and amorphous-silicon thin-film components.

Influence: color change usually occurs on encapsulation materials. This discoloration makes radiation intensity reduce on solar panel and output power decrease on the module. Discoloration usually caused by quality problem of encapsulation material or by environment (high temperature and high humidity)

Treatment: regular inspection on PV module, replace serious discolored modules with new.

2.PV module burned

Analysis: module burned when contact area is too small between bus bar and solder strip or resistance increases.

Influence: module burned will cause the disconnection of spur-track and Loop and affect generating capacity

Treatment: regular inspection, replace the burned with new

3.Deformation or burning of junction box

Analysis: fire caused when lead is not clamped well enough in the slot; resistance increases when contact area is too small between the lead and welding point of the junction box; lead is too long and plastic parts of the junction box is heated up; breakdown short circuit or open circuit occurred in bypass diode.

Influence: module scrapped when is on fire, it may cause fire disaster.

Treatment: regular inspection, replace deformed or burned junction box with new one immediately

4.Mechanical damage

Analysis: external force may cause the glass break. Sand storm, malfunction or even malicious behaviour will cause the damage.

Influence: glass break will have an affect on output power, in severe cases, it will cause the disconnection of spur-track and Loop.

Treatment: regular inspection on modules, especially after extreme weather. Replace the broken module with new.

5.Hot-spot phenomenon

Analysis: when output on one of the unit is less than that of the other units, solar cell of other units will oppositely charge the unit with less output. Cause of heat: surface be covered, short circuit in some parts or high impurity in some parts.

Influence: in severe cases, solar cell and encapsulation material will be damaged and output from solar cell will be reduced.

Treatment: regular check by infrared imaging devices to see if hot spot phenomenon occurs. Replace the damage module immediately, regular weeding in case it covers the module surface.
